Wedding trends from Lake Tahoe to London

lake-tahoe-wedding-beansWe’re always filling you in on wedding trends in Lake Tahoe, since that is what we know best, but we thought it’d be fun to take a peek across the Atlantic and see more global trends in weddings.

Global Wedding Trends

Etsy is not only a popular and inspirational site to visit in the states, its also a go-to for Australia and England. The Etsy-fueled craft of macrame backdrops has become very popular, with brides using them as a “boho luxe flavour to altars, dining rooms and photo areas” according Brides magazine in the UK.

Quirky food options for receptions are trendy, and we’re not just talking food trucks, though they are still on top of the quirky option list. The newer trend is for the trucks to offer fun and funky carnival food such as funnel cakes and sweet fritters (zeppole). Shuck Trucks have been seen pulling up to weddings, full of oysters for your wedding guests.

lake-tahoe-wedding-macrameIn France, metallic flavor is on top this year. Silver, gold and copper have become increasingly popular, from a single showpiece to an entire metallic-themed wedding. They find that metallics are easy to combine with different wedding styles, and allow you to try different accent colors.

An English couple has created a luxury wedding film company. They’ll  shoot the wedding video at movie-level standards. The couples then, at a private cinema, invite friends and family to a champagne reception to watch ‘the premiere’. They’ll even roll out a red carpet for your arrival!

In Costa Rica there is a new twist to bean bags. Guests get to ditch their post-wedding hangover with some bespoke coffee the morning after. Personalized bags of coffee are now very popular wedding favors. Couples can create their own labels and blends.

The popular trend in Japan is for a “western wedding.” Couples there want an American theme to their weddings and many people from the U.S. now living there are being brought in to officiate.

What’s great about getting married in Lake Tahoe, you can add whatever theme and flavor to your wedding that you want. It is your wedding, so do what you like, no matter what country has inspired your idea.

Legendary Lake Tahoe wedding photographer dies in climbing accident

vern wiley 1Vernon Wiley, one of the most creative wedding photographers in the business, died on July 13 at Eagle Lake in Tahoe while waiting for the right lighting as he was taking pictures.

Wiley was 42, and lived in Truckee with his wife and son Logan. His last message to his wife Ashley was a text from the rocks. While he was waiting for the perfect light, Vernon took photos of himself , one of which which have shown here.  The last photo Vernon sent to Ashley was of him sitting above a blue Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, his feet clad in climbing shoes. Detective-Coroner Jacob Groen of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said their Search and Rescue team, along with the California Highway Patrol responded to Ashley Wiley’s call to check on her missing husband at around 6:00 a.m. on July 14 and subsequently found Vernon’s body.

Over the years, Lakefront Wedding featured some of his photos, and they were amazing.

Here is message posted on his facebook page after his death, capturing the essence of a local favorite:

Vernon was a truly unique soul. He shined in social settings, but was rarely comfortable. He was a quick and incredibly accurate judge of character. He felt most at home with those that laughed easily at his jokes. He always considered the real start to his life when he found climbing. He ate, breathed, and slept climbing for years and forged friendships that were made of trust and vern wiley 3adventure. He let very few people into his inner circle, but once there, he was loyal for life. Climbing brought him to the people he called brothers. He spent years living in Yosemite and Bishop happily devoting himself to rocks and mountains.

He and his wife met in the summer of 2003. After Vernon hiked 42 miles in a day to bring her a food drop on the JMT, Ashley asked Vernon out. They moved in together the next day and spent as little time apart as they could manage. Vernon shared with Ashley his love of climbing. Ashley shared with Vernon her love for cold mountain lakes and snowboarding. They maintained a date day where they got out at least every week to play for 13 years. It kept them connected, passionate, and best friends. Their love was like no other.

They moved to Tahoe where Vernon became apart of the incredible wedding community as a photographer. With the help of his best friend, Matt Theilend, Vernon became an award winning vern wiley 2wedding photographer. He also became very successful and well known in the stock industry with Getty Images and Istock. He was the envy of all his friends since a week in the back country was his work and he made a very solid life from it.

In 2009 Vernon became a father. A light turned on in him that was incredible to see. He embraced Logan’s childhood as if he was reliving his own. He never lost patience with his son and loved him loudly and fiercely. Logan’s school principal recently told Logan and Ashley, “I’ve worked with thousands and thousands of dads over the years. Your dad was the best and most active father I have ever seen. You were incredibly lucky”. Logan’s response, “Ya, I know”.

Over the last 5 years, Vernon trained hard for The World’s Toughest Mudder. He was currently training for his 5th WTM. He had a love hate relationship with the training but loved the sport and the amazing community.

Vernon Wiley was so much to so many. To some he was everything. He found peace in the mountains, life on the edge of a cliff, home in the hearts of his wife and son, and adventure in the wind. He will be forever missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Vernon Wiley.  The Lake Tahoe wedding industry lost a special man.

Burlap is out, Whimsical and Fairytales are in

Remember when burlap and shabby chic were all the rage at weddings in Lake Tahoe, and across the country?  Well that seems to be out and replaced with a new theme.  We’re seeing lots of fairy and whimsical wedding themes this year.

Whimsical and Fairy Weddings in Lake Tahoe

When everyone was into vintage and shabby chic weddings, there was an easy theme to carry through, as there was with nautical. But the idea of the whimsical wedding is a trend that has not yet been united by a singular vision across the web. The word “whimsical” is actually defined as “having capricious humor; extravagant, fanciful, and playful.” Come this with fairies, and romance thrives!

Every bride deserves to feel like a princess on her wedding day, and what better way than surrounding yourself with a theme to match? From romantic flowers, chair and table decor, to the dresses and hairpieces, fairy weddings can be a beautiful event, for sure.

Colors

The color this year seems to be sage green, leafy and whimsical with lots of strung lights, s’mores bars and more. Even with your Lake Tahoe destination wedding, we can help you add these items to your wedding through flowers, lighting, linens, and rentals such as lounge furniture and more!  Another part of whimsical are loud colors, so bold and beautiful…but again, we can get these into your wedding as well!

Flowers

So many choices for flowers, depending on what colors you want. You can go with ideas above, or more whimsical with bold and non-traditional like below.  The baskets they used in the first photo were then turned into centerpieces for the reception!

Cheers! How to estimate bar costs for your wedding reception

cocktails at lake tahoe wedding

lake tahoe weddingHow much is the bar going to cost at your wedding reception? Huge question with each wedding so we have included a very general formula, but his only works if you’re at a wedding venue where you are allowed to bring in your own alcohol. If so, how much do you bring?  How do you calculate when guests may have more than one drink? How much glassware do you need?

We get these questions a lot at Lake Front wedding, and there is no one answer for all of our couples. The biggest determining factor is budget, and below you’ll find several options from fully hosted bar to a signature cocktail table.

Hosted bar at your Lake Tahoe wedding reception

Three options from one of our Lake Tahoe caterers to try and give you an idea of bar costs at your wedding reception.

Option #1:

No Host Bar – Hosting Keg Beer, House Wines & Champagne, & Non-alcoholic beverages

Our Estimate = $25.00 per person on average

 Option #2

Open Hosted Bar for cocktail hour only & hosting Keg Beer, House Wines & Champagne & Non-alcoholic beverages throughout reception

Our Estimate = $30.00 per person on average

Option #3

Open Hosted – no restrictions

Our Estimate = $35.00 per person on average

some couples opt for an open bar, where guests have access to unlimited drinks throughout the entire reception. While this is certainly the most gracious approach, it’s also the most expensive and could end up costing as much as 10 to 20% of your total budget. An alternative is the “limited,” or “soft,” bar, where you offer a careful selection of drinks (say, wine, beer and vodka cocktails) at the bar during specific times (throughout the cocktail hour and right after dinner), then have waiters serve wine or beer during the meal.

On a tight budget? Don’t even think about having a cash bar. Guests should never be expected to pay for their own drinks. Instead, consider skipping the hard stuff, which is pricey, and serve less- costly wine and beer only. Or, opt to offer your site’s “well” brands of liquor, which are less expensive than premium brands; the same goes for house wines and champagne. Also, discourage the wait staff from refilling wine glasses at dinner with- out first asking guests if they want more.

wedding dayIf you do a Champagne toast, everyone will have to have a “glass in hand” so figure the cost of glassware for each person into your budget.

We think planning on three drinks per person is a good formula, since some will drink more, and some less.

Setting up your own bar

Did you choose a venue where you can set up your own bar?  If so, you’ll save a lot of money, but remember the above charges include a bartender, so you’ll have to plan on someone for this position unless you just set up a “serve yourself” table. There are great options on Pinterest (our fave) as well.

According to Bridal Guide, here is  an estimate of what you’ll need for 100 guests:

  • 10 bottles of vodka
  • 6 bottles each of gin and rum
  • 4 bottles of scotch
  • 2 bottles each of whiskey, bourbon, tequila and Triple Sec
  • 2 bottles of vermouth.
  • Have on hand 2 cases of beer, 3 to 4 cases (36 to 48 bottles) of white wine and 2 to 3 cases (24 to 36 bottles) of red wine.
  • Three cases (36 bottles) of champagne should be enough.

Also, be sure to arrange to have plenty of soft drinks and water (bottled and tap) on hand.

cocktails at lake tahoe weddingSignature Wedding Drink

What we think is one of the best, and most affordable (AND FUN) option is to have a signature drink.  Prepare the drink mix ahead of time, pour over ice into cute glasses such as Mason jars, and voila! No need to try and figure out how much of each type of alcohol to buy, and who wants to drink what. Here is a recipe we found on The Knot that sounds tasty:

  • 2 oz. cranberry juice
  • oz. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 3/4 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1/2 oz. creme de cassis
  • 1/2 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • orange slice, 1 maraschino cherry, cocktail umbrella, for garnish

The value of a Lake Tahoe destination wedding

Lake Tahoe Wedding Photo | Lake Front Wedding

Destination weddingLake Tahoe is one of the most popular and favorite places to get married, and, according to national polls, for honeymoons!  What a great opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds with your destination wedding in Lake Tahoe!

What is a destination wedding?

A destination wedding is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their marriage at a gorgeous destination like Lake Tahoe, one that is away from home. This gives couples the opportunity  to celebrate their marriage at a destination of their choosing.

Many couples use this as an opportunity to have an intimate, romantic wedding without having to worry about a large number of guests to plan for.  But, many other couples still have a large wedding if they have a group of family and friends that are able to travel.

How to plan a destination wedding?

If a destination wedding is in your plans, consider one of our many beautiful wedding venues in lake tahoe weddingsLake Tahoe. Look over Lake Tahoe, gaze at the lake, the mountains, the trees….all with the WOW factor!

At Lake Front Wedding & Events we specialize in destination weddings, so couples can leave the planning to us, from start to finish. We know the vendors, the venues, hotels and other arrangements you’ll need for your wedding.  Our suggestions are invaluable to hundreds of couples each year.

Costs of a destination wedding

Since Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular locations for weddings away from home, and our outdoor venues fill up quickly since the weather dictates many locations, one might find costs above what they expect should they get married near home.

A golf course at home may cost $7,000 to have a wedding, while our costs are well above that at our two beautiful country club locations.  The dozens of weddings venues around the lake where lake-front-wedding-ski-6weddings are performed charge a fee that we must pay, just to have the wedding, not counting the food, the minister, the chairs, the music and whatever else you want to have.

Even though a Lake Tahoe wedding may cost you more, you need to remember you get more than you pay for…the views and memories are free!

Honeymoons

If its costs you’re looking to keep down, you can honeymoon in Lake Tahoe!  No more need to fly off to exotic locations when you have skiing, boating, hiking, biking and relaxing outside your door.  You can not only enjoy the wedding, but when everyone has left and gone back home, you can enjoy time alone in Lake Tahoe and get your honeymoon on!

Remember loved ones at your wedding

loved ones

A wedding is the perfect time to gather together our loved ones, but many times that isn’t possible as some of our favorite people may no longer be with us.

Many of our Lake Tahoe brides and grooms are finding a way to both honor and remember these loved ones in their wedding ceremony.

Remember Loved Ones

Here are a few of our favorite ideas to remember loved ones.

remember loved ones

  1.  Since your loved one won’t be able to take a seat at your wedding and reception, save one for them with photos and trinkets.
  2. Have your florist create a tree or large arrangement where you can hang photos with ribbons.
  3. Everyone loves to re-purpose crates these days, so why not use one in your wedding? Display things that symbolize the loved one – letters, photos, lace, tickets….endless possibilities.
  4. A lovely table draped in your linens with framed photos and candles.
  5. A plaque can be purchased, or made with a personal message to hang at your wedding ceremony.
  6. Make or buy a memory candle to have on display at your guest book table.

Valentines Day Weddings in Lake Tahoe

winter wedding in lake tahoe

winter wedding in lake tahoeNothing says “romance” like February 14, Valentine’s Day. Just ten to twenty years ago there would be hundreds of couples lined up outside the chapels in Lake Tahoe, just to have their Valentines Day wedding. Ceremonies would be just minutes long in order to get through all of the anxious couples.

While this is still a popular day to get married, we don’t see the long lines in front of chapels.

Valentines Day Weddings

Instead of the long lines at a low budget, quickie wedding chapel, our couples are coming for a the wedding of their dreams, just as they do all year long. They select our special wedding venues with great views and plenty of room for their guests to watch them say “I do.”

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday, not a normally busy days for weddings, but that may change this year. If you’d like to get married on February 14, 2016, call us and we’ll be able to create a fabulous wedding for you!  Many of the most popular venues are still available. Get married at Emerald Bay, the Ski Resort or the Country Club!  We should still have plenty of snow so you can even get married on our sleigh, complete with a big heart.

You can check out Pinterest to for some great Valentine’s Day wedding ideas, from attire to decor.

Kids or No Kids at Your Wedding?

Lake Tahoe weddingsThis is a tough question that we hear all the time at Lake Front Wedding in Lake Tahoe.  Some couples are set against having young children at their wedding, while others want kids, especially if they have some of their own.  Sometimes it is due to the extra cost a child will add to the reception. It also may be that the couple just doesn’t want the disruption some children can cause.  It can be a big decision between couples and the choice is really up to you.

When You Don’t Want Kids at Your Wedding

The tough question is, “How do I specify on the wedding invitation that we don’t want children at the ceremony and/or reception?”  This is a delicate situation, for sure, and has been covered in articles for years, yet, its never easy. Simply addressing your invitations to “Mr. & Mrs.” will not always get the hint across that those are the only 2 people invited.

Here are some helpful ideas:

Put a link to your wedding website on your invitations (and social media if you have one for the big day).  On the site you can have a tab for “kids” and say if they are allowed or not, and supply some options for their local care.

On your RSVP card, state that you have reserved a spot at your wedding for your friend and 1 guest.

If you are having electronic responses, put “Adult 1” and “Adult 2” as boxes for your guest(s) to check off. You can word your RSVP card the same way.

“Adult Only Reception Following Ceremony”  or ““Ceremony and reception intended for adults only” are some invitation wording ideas. Couples can also say “Due to limited venue space, Adults only please.” People who want to attend both your wedding and reception will leave the little ones at home.  No matter how delicately you word it, there is a chance someone is going to be offended unfortunately.  Don’t use “no kids invited” as that is harsh and won’t be well accepted.

Some people will ask if they can bring their kids, no matter how you spread the word.  This puts brides in a difficult situation. We don’t think any one way is 100% foolproof, but all you can do is try and get on with planning your wedding!

Since 99% of our weddings are for couples from outside the Lake Tahoe area, most parents aren’t going to come for a weekend wedding without their children.  Look below for solutions that fit this dilemma.

Another solution you can have, especially if you have a lot of friends with wee ones, is to say “We have arranged for offsite childcare for children under 13 (or whatever you choose).”  Sometimes teenagers can add a fun vibe to your wedding and reception so you may want to include them. You can also provide a list of local babysitters, or have a room set up nearby with pizza and someone hired to watch over the situation.

The wedding couple knows their friends and relatives the best, so each situation will be different.  Being upfront and stating “This is an adult only wedding and reception” on your invitations and websites states what the couple desires and attendees should abide by those wishes and make arrangements for their children.

Hope this helps!

Don’t forget, that if you do have children at your reception, to tell your Lake Front Coordinator because many reception venues have special meals for kids under 10… or some venues even have kids meals priced at half off!

If you have any questions or concerns about planning your Lake Tahoe wedding, email us or call Lake Front Wedding & Events at  800-933-8246.
